GET A FLU SHOT!!

Hey folks,

In my house there are four people so if one of us comes down with something the other three usually end up with it. That also often happens at work since we are in close quarters no matter how hard we try to stop it. This flu thing has me a bit worried particularly since one of my family members attends Marshall , one works in the hospital and I am here on campus. I received the message below today and thought it worth passing on although I am not sure of its original source. I have also read other articles and material from the CDC and other sources concerning flu that I wanted to share with you. There are several strains of viruses besides H1N1 but this is VERY GOOD advice for the flu season period, not just Swine flu. Dr. Offices, public restrooms, restaurants, grocery stores or shopping areas are great places to come in contact with sick people, essentially anywhere we go. Unfortunately so are work environments like ours where we come in contact with many different people everyday who may not realize they are becoming ill or come to class or work even when they don't feel well.

Facts and Tips

Take care of yourself. Get plenty of rest & drink lots of water.

Use hand sanitizer on top of hand washing.

Don't "reuse" tissues or use cloth handkerchiefs. I have a habit of wiping my nose & sticking the tissue in my pocket. (Bad idea)

Vitamins and Minerals,Fruits & veggies and fruit juices are good sources of nutrition.

The body can not absorb TOO much vitamin C. The recommended dosage is 500mg 3x a day. That does not mean 1500 mg in the morning, but spread out during the day. What is not absorbed/used will be excreted. Fruits & veggies and fruit juices are good sources of nutrition. Multi vitamins that include magnesium, copper, folic acid and other vitamins and minerals work to strengthen the immune system but adding more "C" is still a good idea; even the inexpensive brands you find at Dollar General, Family Dollar or the Dollar Tree have essentially the same ingredients. Zinc is an excellent defense against colds & flu. BUT it also thins the blood for some folks and may not be advisable if you take blood thinner medication or aspirin. If you are on medication, check with your doctor or "Google" effects of certain vitamins & minerals that might react with or against your prescriptions.

Drink hot liquids. Some folks like the "flavored" teas or green tea, hot dr pepper, hot chocolate and other warm drinks such as broth or soup serve the same purpose, to remove germs from the mouth & throat. I will stick with my coffee & tea with Splenda because of my sugar. Elevated blood sugar FEEDS infection & viruses so if you happen to be extra sweet like me (diabetic) take precautions there as well.

There are several brands of throat sprays available and I know that Listerine markets little pocket packs with melt away strips that you just pop in your mouth to kill germs. Gargling is better but it's rather difficult to gargle when you are behind the deskJ.

I haven't gotten the hang of using a Netti pot myself without drowning in the stuff but the idea is to clean the nasal passages so using a saline nasal spray serves the same purpose.

Many of the sources I have read warn against stress and anxiety. What is there to be anxious about, flu, holidays, weather?
